Responsibilities During gunnery Drills

Match Monkey
-
i. Holds the lit match or other ignition instrument safely away from black powder while gunners are loading and priming.
ii. Keeps the hot match lit when using matches (or suitable replacements such as cigars)
iii. When using torches makes sure they are out while loading guns, and lit immediately before being needed to fire guns.

Powder Monkey
i. Keeps black powder charges and primer flasks safely away from guns during firing process, and away from Hot match.
ii. Hands charges to gunners when they are ordered to charge the cannons.
iii. Hands primer flasks to gunners when ordered to prime guns, and takes primer flasks back when gunners are finished with them.

Gunner
i. Inspect Gun and carriage before each shot for safety
1. Breaching intact
2. Carriage or mount intact / Secure
3. Trunion locks closed and locked (if applicable)
4. Carriage Centered on decking (if applicable)
ii. Loading and packing of charge when ordered
iii. Bursting the charge (if applicable)
iv. Priming of gun when ordered
v. Firing of Gun when ordered.
vi. Cleaning of Gun after each round to ready for next round
1. Worm
2. Wet Swab
3. Dry swab

Gunnery Officer
i. Over See actions of all other members of the Gun Crew
ii. Ensure that it is Safe and appropriate to run the guns
1. No over riding safety issues (i.e. something going on in the cannon safety zone)
2. No over riding protocol issues (i.e. disturbing a scheduled stage show)
3. Ensure guns are Stood down appropriately when finished
iii. Decide on Firing order
1. Starboard to Larboard
2. Larboard to Starboard
3. In a Broadside Fashion
4. Officers Discretion
iv. Give the orders
1. Charge your guns
2. Prime your guns
3. Run ‘em out
4. Fire
5. Swab 'em out
